Madera County Saves Energy And Money

Madera County Saves Energy And Money

After most of Madera County’s staff quit for the day, crews of electricians went to work the past couple of weeks upgrading the existing lighting in many county buildings.

Thousands of old inch-diameter fluorescents have been replaced with skinner bulbs – called T8s in light lingo. These new bulbs are 5/8-inch in diameter and use significantly less power while providing the same amount of light. In some cases, new-fangled fixtures with light emitting diodes, or LEDs, have replaced existing lighting.

The changes will create significant savings to Madera County coffers through lower utility bills. The energy efficiency retrofits when complete will save the county about 535,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year. That equates to a savings of about $64,000 a year.

The entire project isn’t costing the County a dime.

Burn Suspension Lifted In Madera County

Burn Suspension Lifted In Madera County

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has lifted the suspension of burning on private lands within Madera County.

Open burning will be allowed on permissive burn days as established by the Air Pollution Control District in each county.  Fire weather will be monitored and if the need arises restricted burning hours or suspension will be reissued.

CAL FIRE is not requiring burn permits at this time.  Due to the recent rainfall and the projected forecast for more rain improves the conditions for burning vegetation created by working on 100 foot defensible space.

Clear all flammable material and vegetation from the outer edge of the pile, keep a water supply close to the burning site.
