Children's Hospital Selects President CEO

Todd Suntrapak has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of Children's Hospital Central California by the hospital’s Board of Trustees, effective immediately. Since joining Children’s in 1995, Suntrapak has provided leadership in clinical operations as well as strategy and business development, serving most recently as the hospital’s executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Suntrapak is a Fresno native and alumnus of Fresno State, whose connection to Children’s dates back to age four, when he was treated at the hospital for severe respiratory issues. He was a regular patient and credits Children’s with saving his life multiple times.

Board of Trustees Chairman Jeff Mayer said Suntrapak was selected as the best candidate for the position after a national search, based on his contributions to the hospital’s expansion as a regional referral center and his success in charting a course for operational and financial sustainability since becoming Chief Operating Officer in 2005.

“It was critical to the Board that our leader be able to successfully navigate Children’s through the challenges ahead,” said Mayer. “Todd has that experience, plus an unrivaled depth of appreciation for Children’s and the important role it plays in ensuring that the children of central California receive the high quality health care they deserve. We’re in the midst of revolutionary changes in healthcare operations and funding and we believe Todd is uniquely positioned to help guide us through these times while ensuring that we remain true to our mission.”

As executive vice president and chief operating officer for the last seven years, Suntrapak has been accountable for the hospital’s fiscal health and overall operation as well as strategic growth.

Since 2005, Suntrapak has lead a team that has improved patient safety by lowering hospital-acquired infection rates, reducing adverse drug events including no medication errors in recent years that resulted in life-threatening and/or permanent adverse consequences, reducing patient falls and decreasing acute care codes.

“I’m deeply honored to have been selected by the board to serve as Children’s CEO.  As a valley native, I know first hand the importance of Children’s to our communities and am committed to ensuring that Children’s stays on the leading edge of quality pediatric care,” said Suntrapak. “We have an excellent team of physicians and staff and a wonderful region that supports our work.  We’ll continue to build on our successes and to focus on ensuring that Children’s continues to create healthier futures for the kids we serve well into the future. ”

Prior to joining Children’s, Suntrapak worked in business development and contracting for a health care subsidiary of W. R. Grace & Co.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Fresno State , holds a master’s degree in health care management from California Coast University and earned his Executive Leadership Certificate from UC Berkeley’s  Haas School of Business.

He’s served as a mentor through the Craig School of Business’ entrepreneurship program at California State University, Fresno and is a  board member for the California Health Leadership College where he also serves as a faculty member. He is a member of the board of United Way of Fresno and has served as the president of the Sierra Pacific Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives,  on the American College of Healthcare Executives Regents Advisory Council and Fresno/Madera American Red Cross and Exceptional Parents Unlimited boards.
