Liberty High Duct Tape Dates Attend Prom

Liberty High Duct Tape Dates Attend Prom

The duct tape prom dates put four months of fashion design on display Saturday night. Kinsey Carlson and her boyfriend Darren Brannan were the talk of Liberty High School's prom at Wolf Lakes.

The junior from Madera Ranchos has been working on her dress and accessories not to mention Darren's tux since January. The couple is competing in Duck Brand duct tape's national contest.

Each contestant has to wear an outfit made of duct tape to the prom. Kinsey Carlson was happy with her finished product. "A lot of stares, a lot of not so much laughs but overall amazement. A lot of people are confused. They really don't understand that it's duct tape."

Darren Brannan wore his tux proudly. "It came out wonderful. Everything is really good. There's a little bit touch and go. It was a very late night last night."

The winning couple in the national contest splits a $10,000 college scholarship.

Portable Water Stations Added At 2 Madera Schools

Portable Water Stations Added At 2 Madera Schools

Students at George Washington Elementary in Madera now have more access to drinking water thanks to new portable water stations.

The portable water stations, also at Sierra Vista Elementary in Madera, are on carts that can easily be moved from the cafeteria to the outdoor playgrounds.  Usually, drinking fountains at schools are located outside, making it difficult for kids to drink water when they are in the cafeteria at lunch.

Students at George Washington Elementary and Sierra Vista Elementary also received water bottles as an incentive to use the stations and drink water during lunch and recess.

Additionally, Rethink Your Drink lessons have been incorporated into classroom lessons for 4th-6th grades at both schools. Students are taught how to read beverage labels, identify sugar in drinks and choose healthier drinking options.
