Netherton/Rotary Relays At Madera High May 18th

Madera Unified students from the first through the sixth grade will participate in the 19th annual Netherton/Rotary Relays, which take place Friday May 18th beginning at 6 p.m. at Madera High School.

MUSD’s 13 K-6 schools, three K-8 schools, Ezequiel Tafoya Alvarado Academy charter school and Crossroads Academy will each field a team. First, second and third graders will run an 8 x 50-meter race while fourth, fifth and sixth graders run a 4 x 100 race.

Races will be competed on the stadium’s all-weather track, with the students staged on the grassy area between the stadium and the fieldhouse. The Madera Rotary Club will host a full concession stand on the home side of the stadium.

Rotary also supplies a medal to each student who participates, and students on relay teams that finish in first, second or third receive a t-shirt.

The Amgen Tour of California motors through Tuolumne County into Fresno County on Wednesday, May 16, 2012.  The California Highway Patrol will be managing road closures along the race course to provide safety and security to the race participants as well as to the public.  Stage #4 of the 2012 AMGEN Tour of California will begin in Sonora and pass through the communities of Mariposa and Oakhurst before finishing in downtown Clovis.

Veteran Drivers Coming To Madera Speedway May 19th

The racing has been fantastic in the first two Coors Light Open late model series races at Madera Speedway, but it could get even better as Elliot Stjerne, Emma Tucker, Cole Custer, and Trevor Huddleston join the action on May 19th.

Stjerne is the driver that won the most late model races at the Madera Speedway in 2012. Emma Tucker is an up and coming star with a big fan base, Cole Custer is the 2011 USAC National Focus Midget Champion, and Trevor Huddleston is the son of three-time Irwindale Late Model Champion Tim Huddleston.

Round one winner Dallas Montes is the series point leader, but round two race winner Matt Erickson is only three points behind Montes. Neither one of these drivers can look back as Trevor Schlundt is only six points behind the series leader, and Kenny Smith is only seven points back.

After having its first scheduled Super Saturday event rained out, the sun will be shining when Madera Speedway returns to action on Saturday May 5th. 

The Vukovich Classic features Round #1 of the Super Saturday presented by Coors Light 410/360 Super Modifieds, USAC Sprint Cars, BCRA/USAC Midgets, NCMA Sprints Cars, Southwest Tour Truck Series, Vintage Super Modifieds, Valley Sportsman, BCRA Vintage Sprints & Midgets.

There will be plenty of local drivers from the Central Valley that will roar around the Speedway’s newly paved track for 50 laps of  Super Modified racing as well as the other great classes competing.

The talented list includes Tanner Swanson of Kingsburg, Kyle Vanderpool of Madera, Jim Birges of Fresno and A.J. Russell of Clovis.

Coarsegold Rodeo Turns Sixty In May

Since 1952 the Coarsegold Rodeo has been entertaining families with the thrills of Pro Rodeo action as the historic event marks 60 years.

The rodeo runs for 3 days kicking off on Friday, May 4th with Heritage Days.  Local school children will be able to join in the fun by making crafts and watching various riding demonstrations.  In the afternoon, the Rodeo Royalty hopefuls will ride and conduct interviews with the judges starting at  6:00 p.m.

Rodeo action goes in to high gear on Saturday, May 5th and carries through on Sunday at the Bohna Arena on Road 415 in Coarsegold.

Gates open at 10:00 a.m. Admission prices are children under 12 only $5 and adults $10 per person  

Little cowboys and cowgirls can try their hand at a mechanical bull and enjoy various inflatables.

Three Deputies Place In Baker To Vegas Run

Three Madera County Deputy Sheriff’s accepted the challenge to run for the gold in the 28th “Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay Race” and finished in record time.

Detectives Bennie Romiti and Zack Zamudio and Deputy Darrell Swengel dashed to Baker a this past weekend determined to show fellow athletes that Madera County can be counted among the running elite.

M.K. Kanke Wins Main Event

It took almost all 125 laps for Frazier Park’s M.K. Kanke to claim the SRL SPEARS Southwest Tour Series main race in the “Melo’s Gas and Gear 125” presented by AmeriPride on Fresno Grizzlies Night at the Madera Speedway on Saturday April 21st.

In the Mike Roos Memorial, Kanke passed race-leader Jim Pettit II of Prunedale with less than nine laps remaining and held on for his first victory of the season after finishing fourth in the division’s race premier on April 7th in Stockton. <?xml:namespace prefix = o />

It was a tough break for Pettit, who led from Laps 54 to 117 after trailing Zane Lovelace for the first 53 laps.
