High-Speed Rail's Next Stop: Court

High-Speed Rail's Next Stop: Court

A Valley city is taking California's High-Speed Rail to court.

The Chowchilla City Council unanimously agreed to file the lawsuit against the California High-Speed Rail Authority.

Council members say they're concerned the recently adopted Merced to Fresno Section Project Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) does not meet the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act.

Council members say they're concerned about the project including the safety and impact to school routes that they say have not been addressed by the report.

"We believe this lawsuit is the only reasonable course of action to have our concerns addressed comprehensively," Chowchilla Mayor Janan Hebert said.

The Chowchilla City Council has gone on record in support of Assembly Bill 1455, a bill designed to stop the proposed High-Speed Rail project.

Assemblywoman Diane Harkey authored AB1455 which would reduce the amount of general obligation debt authorized for high speed rail purposes pursuant to the Safe, Reliable High Speed Passenger Train Bond Act for the 21st Century to the amount contracted as of January 1, 2013.

Another Stolen Plane Found, Man Arrested

Another Stolen Plane Found, Man Arrested

For the second time in as many months a stolen plane is found in the Valley.

The stolen Cessna 172 was spotted flying over of the city of Chowchilla Wednesday afternoon by the city's police chief.

Chief Jay Varney says the pilot was flying so erratically on his final approach that he decided to check him out.

Chief Varney says, "I've ran into a lot of occupied stolen cars, I've been in the line of work for almost 29 years but I've never run into an occupied stolen plane."

Chief Varney says he found Lonnie Blackburn, a pilot from Madera, spray painting over the plane's registration numbers.

Police say the Cessna was stolen from Paradise, California, and had been flown to Butte County, and was making a quick stop at the airport.

Inside the plane, detectives found some stolen items.

They believe Blackburn may have wanted to sell the plane to someone else possibly to transport drugs.
