How to Drive Safely in Fog

How to Drive Safely in Fog

The storm has moved out of the Valley, and now the fog has rolled in.

KMPH News viewer Devo sent in this photo of the fog in the South Valley. It was taken just before 7:30 a.m. Monday in southeast Visalia.

CHP officers say that when the weather changes, commuters need to change their driving habits.

When driving in thick fog, officials offer these tips to stay safe:

-Turn off radio and cell phone
-Slow down
-Remember to drive with lights on low beam
-Roll down your window slightly and listen for traffic

The CHP says that as many as 500 fog-related car crashes occur each year in the Central Valley.

Officials say that if you are involved in a fog-related accident, the best thing you can do is pull as far off the road as possible, turn off the lights, and move away from the car.

CAL FIRE Transitions Into Winter Preparedness

CAL FIRE Transitions Into Winter Preparedness

News release from CAL FIRE:

Cooler weather and recent rains have prompted the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to transition into winter staffing levels as of Monday November 14, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. for the Madera, Mariposa, Merced Unit.  Unit Chief Nancy B. Koerperich states the transition to winter preparedness allows CAL FIRE to manage our budget efficiently through limited staff reductions and station closures where the threat of wildland fires has been severely limited or mitigated due to the weather.

CAL FIRE remains prepared to respond to any emergency, including wildfires, with sufficient staffing. But should the need arise, CAL FIRE is prepared to call resources back should fire weather conditions dictate. The cooler temperatures and higher humidity allow for a transition to winter preparedness that coincides with the permitting of residential hazard reduction burning in some areas.

Lightning Storms Spark Fires in Mariposa, Madera Counties

Lightning Storms Spark Fires in Mariposa, Madera Counties

A series of lightning storms moved through Madera and Mariposa Counties Sunday sparking several wildland fires. The first lightning strike happened at approximately 9 a.m. with eight fires breaking out in Madera County and six fires in Mariposa County, said Karen Guillermin, spokeswoman for Cal Fire.

The largest of the fires was in the Hensley Lake area and charred about 95 acres.

Guillermin says all of the fires were in remote areas. No buildings have been damaged. Firefighters had a tough time getting to the flames because of the difficult terrain.

An aircraft will be flying over the area Monday checking for any new fires.

Crews are also working to put out the Grove Fire in Madera County, which has charred about 10 acres.
